Zojirushi ECDAC50 Zutto 5Cup Drip Coffeemaker

Posted on 19 November 2009 by admin

The Zutto Collection is Zojirushi's first collection of products that is designed and developed as a series of products. The concept of the Zutto Collection was born as a result of the collaboration between Zojirushi and an interior designer in Japan. Unlike other Zojirushi products, the physical body of the Zutto was designed first, then the inner technology. Zutto (Zoot-tow), meaning always in Japanese, is designed to be loved and used universally, for any occasion, anytime. This new Zutto Drip Coffee Maker is a convenient 5 cup size. ....read more

I bought this for my husband (I don’t drink coffee). We have low cabinets and this is one of the only coffee makers under 12 inches. I read the reviews and wasn’t sure the coffee would be warm enough or strong enough but my husband says it make better coffee than our ancient Krups coffee maker.

I ran water through it a few times to get rid of the plastic smell and then it was fine. I would recommend this if you don’t need a lot of coffee at once and from what my husband says if you want a fantastic cup of coffee.

I like the look too-very contemporary

I was looking for a small coffee maker that would make about two coffee mug servings. This machine is very compact and works well.

    superior for its size.
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Positives: the coffee tastes fantastic. The water is warmish, not hot. Size is fine for one person. Price is very excellent.

Negatives: Seems to take a “long” time to drip 1 1/2 cups of coffee (like 3-4 minutes). So you can do other chores and let it drip.

I received this for a Christmas gift and like everything I read about it, EXCEPT having to unplug it every time we use it. Do you who already have this coffee maker, and use it daily, really unplug it after every use???

    Thanks for your responses.

    Excellent coffee maker
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I like this one a lot. It makes a fantastic tasting cup of coffee. It brews honestly quickly, it’s silent, it doesn’t take up much counter space, it’s simple to operate, simple to clean. I don’t really have anything terrible to say about it. I’ve read some reviews here where people said the coffee isn’t hot enough. I drink my coffee black and the temperature is perfect for me, but I could see if you place milk in your coffee it may not be hot enough. If you drink black coffee like me, it’s fantastic. Even with cheap coffee there is no bitterness. Zojirushi’s 5 cups only works out to be about 22 ounces. Just the right amount for the travel mug I take with me to work every day. I didn’t smell plastic when using it, even for the first time. But I washed all of the parts before the first use.

EDIT* For those of you who say your coffee tastes like dirty water, try using bottled spring water to brew your coffee. The quality of your water makes all the difference.

    Fantastic small coffee maker!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I normally do not write reviews, but had to place in my two cents for this wonderful small coffee maker. After going through 2 Mr. Coffee four cup coffee makers in the last three years, it was time to try something new. I’ll drink as much coffee as I make so I’ve had to limit myself to smaller coffee makers. Of the limited choices available, I chose to buy this one based on all of the brilliant reviews. This coffee maker, other than not being red, has been spectacular. From the removable water reservoir to the conical filtering, it makes a consistently brilliant cup of coffee. Clean up is a snap and the design looks fantastic. So far, this coffee maker has been flawless.

I just received the order of this coffee maker. When I opened up the box, the first thing I noticed is the print “Made in China”. When I pay $65 for a basic function coffee maker like this one I expect something from Japan. I have some appliances at home from same brand they are “Made in Japan”. Be aware!

This is the best coffee maker we have ever had. Very hard to find a excellent one that is small. This one makes fantastic coffee every time without the plastic taste that some of the others give to the coffee.

    greatest design ever
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the product for around 2 months and couldn’t be more pleased. It makes a fantastic cup of coffee and the design is fantastic. The coffee pot’s spout works; I pour without any spills. I like it that all the dripping takes place in the pot as opposed to the bottom of the coffee maker. I also like how large the water container is. We remove it and fill it in the sink so again no mess. It’s quick too. Best coffee maker we’ve ever had.

    Worth Every Cent

Brews just a tad slow, but the slow flow extracts all the flavor from the coffee. Simple to clean but the top needs a firm thumb to hold it in place. Or you can remove the holder before pouring. I use a gold-tone number 2 filter, which gives a brew somewhere between paper-filtered drip coffee and French press. I was able to use my filter by pushing the front into the filter holder. Later I cut the front of the gold-tone filter’s plastic rim so it slips into the filter holder perfectly. Nothin’ fancy, just fantastic coffee!

    Filter Ineffective – Advice Provided
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was willing to pay the extra (rather exorbitant) price to get the filtered water for taste (filtering DOES take away bitterness if your water is office-type water). I tested it with and without the filter and could not tell a difference. So, why keep this when you can get the same results for $20? Additionally, all of the parts involved are cumbersome for an office environment. It was returned.

The coffee is hot enough (I wouldn’t want it any hotter). Three stars for average coffee, but poor value.

Tip to get filtered water: buy the PUR CR-6000 2 Stage Oval Water Pitcher for $16 from Amazon and get REALLY well filtered water for your $20 coffee maker. Again, filtering the water helps quite a bit with the bitterness.

Simple to use, basic coffee maker, what I wanted
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Single, wanted a 4-cup brewer. This arrived within 3 days of ordering, packed well, all in excellent condition. Simple on/off switch. Water container pulls out for cleaning, nice feature.

Glass pot is wide at bottom, narrower at the top, pours well, stands well. Uses #2 wedge-type filters, I ordered Melitta Cone Coffee Filters, Natural Brown, No. 2, 100 Count (Pack of 6) by Melitta, they came with the coffee maker. Fit well into the filter holder. I have no issues with their quality, coffee filters through fine for my expectations (though others have complained about them).

Only minor weakness is the loose fit of the filter and lid within the glass pot. The filter really goes ‘in’ the glass pot (perfectly fine by me), then the lid goes on top (then place into coffee maker). The pot lid does not snap on or hold, it simply sits on top. Note it FITS well, it just does not snap, so you must hold it with your thumb when pouring. This is stated clearly on a note place into the glass pot (in packaging).

So except for that minor item, I’d have given it a 5 star rating.

I’ll add it seems to brew at a excellent pace, allowing the water to soak thru the coffee, and the window makes it simple to pour water up to your cup level. I use ’3′ for a 12oz cup, roughly.

    Superior product!!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a very well made Coffee maker which really didn’t come as a total surprise to me as Zojirushi makes wonderful (albeit pricey) products. I’m a small disappointed that it is made in China and not Japan at this price point–esp. since this CM has no bells and whistles. The beauty of this CM is in it’s design–compact footprint, built-in charcoal filter, removable water tank–VERY thoughtful. I’ve really had CM’s in the past develop mold inside and it was nearly impossible to clean. This can be cleaned in your sink with warm soapy water…wouldn’t place it in the DW. Bottom line is it makes a fantastic cup of coffee every time. It does have a very small coffee basket and even a #2 filter is a tad too huge but it does work. Again this CM is quality, quality, quality–miles above the standard honest of Mr. Coffee, B&D, etc. The only other CM I could recommend is BUNN and some Krups models I’ve had a excellent experience with. If you have to make a large pot of coffee every morning for a huge family this may not be the CM for you. But, don’t misconstrue that statement…this is NOT one of those tacky–dreadful mini coffee makers! If you are making coffee for you and your spouse–i.e. empty nesters or single folk–it’s fantastic!

    Super Simple and Tastes Excellent
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I really like this coffee maker. I worked at a coffee shop for a few years and I have become a pretty fussy coffee drinker. I like that this machine is super simple, takes up very small counter space, has a filter built in, and the water container comes out. My only gripe is that the water does not get hot enough before it starts dripping. That is the only reason why I gave it four stars instead of five. In my experience there are two main factors in the taste of drip coffee. The most vital is the temperature of the water. Second is the amount of filtration.

I am extremely impressed with the quality of coffee compared to the size of the machine. I would certainly buy it again.

    Nice but overpriced
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This coffee maker is twice the price of an equivalent Black and Deckor or Mr. Coffee model. While the look and build quality is certainly better, I’m not sure it’s twice better. And the coffee tastes only a small bit better out of this machine.

But, the reliability seems better on this one than lower priced models, and I like the Japanese engineering. It’s still too expensive for what it is though.

    Parts
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this coffee maker for nearly two years now, and I’ve been using it every single blessed morning. I *adore* it. Whenever friends mention they need a new coffee maker, I’m always plugging mine.

A few days ago, I noticed water was slowly dripping from the removable water reservoir while I filled it. It seems to be that a gasket or seal at the bottom has ungasketed or unsealed itself. I inwardly flinched, knowing that the cost of a replacement part would probably be the same price as a new coffee maker.

But I checked anyways. Went to the Zojirushi website, found the coffee maker mysteriously under the “Bread makers and gourmet products” heading, clicked on parts and…. $7.00. It’s only $7.00 for a replacement reservoir. Okay, I figured, then it will be like $20 for shipping, right? Nope. $4.00 shipping.

I’m HIGHLY impressed with how simple it is to find the replacement parts, and how unexpectedly cheap they are! I am still in like with my coffee maker, and I wouldn’t trade it for any other one in the world.

  17. Delvin F. Beimfohr Says:

    Yes, It’s Worth It.
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It may not be the lowest priced 5 cup coffee maker, but like other reviewers have stated, it makes very excellent coffee in a very simple manner. No dials, buttons, displays, clocks, timers or chimes. Just one on/off rocker switch. Wonderful.

Cleaning: I’m an ancient fashioned kind of guy (no dishwasher) and I was pleased to be able to get my entire hand inside the glass pot to wash it out.

Taste: Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not experience any plastic chemical tastes although I did wash all the washable parts in hot soapy water before the first use. My first cup was bliss.

Problem (only 1): No Filters! Every filter type coffee maker I have ever bought since my first apartment has included a few filters in the box to allow me a cup of coffee the first day. Not this one. Fortunately I had some ancient No. 5 cone filters that I attacked with scissors so the day finished well.

Oh yeh, you do have to keep your thumb on the lid when pouring but it’s natural to have your thumb on that spot anyway so no problem.

I’m glad I bought this and I recommend it to others looking for a 5 cup (really 2 mugs) drip coffee maker.

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this small plain jane coffee maker based on the reviews, and the fact that it has a cone shaped filter.

It futher has a removeable water tank, which few, if any, have anymore. The removeable tank prevents those small accidents from “dinging” the carafe on the metal faucet..It makes hot tasty coffee, it is a no brainer to operate,it is not inexpensive, compared to many other of comparable size, but it is worth the price for the flavor of coffe it produces. It has a charcoal filter which probably helps. Having said all that, it does not have an automatic shut off. For those of us who leave the house for the day, and usually in a rush, this requires some adjustment, at least it did for me.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I looked for a small coffee maker for a long time. It was a bonus to find a five cup instead of a four cup. It makes fantastic coffee and worth the price that I paid. The only downfall, a small one, is that it drips when you pour if not careful and you need to remember to secure the lid when you pour or it may fall off. Very small problem, but.

Very excellent, but could be better
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I recently bought the coffee maker after my 4-cup Mr. Coffee Maker died. I do like the cone shaped filter, as I can make one cup of coffee and have it turn out well. The design is nice, although you do have to place your thumb on the handle to hold the insert in place–not a huge deal. What I don’t like about it is that the heat setting is too hot; I usually make one full pot of coffee (2 coffee cups worth), pour the first cup and then turn off the coffee maker. It usually keeps the remaining coffee warm enough for the second cup, but I will often zap the second cup in the microwave for 15 seconds to get it hotter. If you leave the coffee maker on, the coffee will end up being burned. I hope they change the temp setting on revisions to make it even better.

    Simple is Excellent
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I really delight in using this coffee maker each morning. Besides the fantastic tasting coffee I appreciate the simplicity of the design. There’s an on/off switch and that’s it. The set up of doing the brewing inside the pot (combined with the removable reservoir) is incredibly straightforward and simple to clean as a result.

I would not recommend this coffee maker if you do a lot of entertaining – but I don’t reckon that was ever the purpose of this machine. It brews two (extra large) mugs of coffee at a time, perfect for my daily routine of brewing enough coffee for just one or two people.

Here’s the real scoop – at least IMO
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have only had the Zutto coffee maker for less than a week, but can already say that I like it a fantastic deal. It does not have all the bells and whistles of many other coffee makers, but it does make fantastic coffee into a glass, not un-insulated metal carafe. It does have a water level indicator, unlike the only other (as far as I know) four cup cone-type filter machine. Having the removable water tank is a fantastic feature. Now, let me talk about some of the negatives mentioned in other reviews. Some have said that a gold-tone permanent filter will not fit. I don’t know where they got that information; I have one and it fits and works perfectly. As to the coffee not being hot enough – 180 degrees is supposed to be ‘optimal’ for brewing; I measure 173.8 on a very excellent digital cooking thermometer right after brewing. I can’t believe that 6.2 degrees makes that much difference, and I do not consider this “not hot” as stated in another review. I have no distress holding the lid in place while pouring. I see no splatter of hot water during brewing. No, you cannot get a cup during brewing, but with a coffee maker this small, the small wait should not hurt. I now use a smaller amount of coffee than I did in either a Black and Decker or a Mr Coffee and get stronger, more flavorful coffee with more aroma than with either of the above. What’s not to like? Oh, you have to turn it off manually…Oh well!

  24. Alan McCoy Says:

    Not a 5 cup machine
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Be aware that this coffee maker will not make enough coffee for two 12 oz mugs of coffee. Our previous 4 cup model will easily make enough for two 12 oz mugs of coffee, so we expected that this one would too. Not so. Not even close. Be aware also that you cannot use gold mesh filters in this machine. I called the manufacturer about it and they specifically designed it so that gold mesh filters will not fit. The excuse, er… reason, given was to avoid overflow. It may make decent coffee, but these are dreadfully small 5 cups! I returned it to Amazon with no problem.

  25. R. Pennington Says:

    Carafe Design Flaw
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I agree with most of the other posters here that this is a fine coffee maker. BUT… it has a major flaw in that the carafe handle design is flawed. It works by a metal strap tight around the neck of the carafe, holding the handle on. Other coffee makers I’ve used with this design, also have some means of attaching the bottom of the handle to the side of the carafe, which lessons the pressure made on the strap when you pour. The Zojirushi does not, and when you pour, there’s a lot of pressure on the neck of the carafe. I’ve had to replace the carafe twice, because after time, it develops a crack in the glass at the neck, which eventually leads to breakage. As I say, this has happened twice, and at @20.00+ a pop for new carafes, it starts to add up to being way to expensive to keep. I’ve had my Zojirushi for about a year and a half, and other than the carafe problem, it has worked well.

  26. M. Wilson Says:

Excellent Coffee, Terrible chemical smell at first
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Coffee tastes fine, the maker is honestly quick and is an attractive design. I like that it is small. I rarely need more than a few mugs so the 5 “cup” size is perfect. I’ve been through several pod makers too, and was rarely impressed with the taste. I did find one excellent tasting brand via mail order, but the pods were VERY expensive.

Before I used it, I ran several pots of water only in an attempt to get rid of the chemical smell. It was slow going so I soaked the parts I could in water with baking soda. After a few more cycles with water, the smell is gone. I had this issue with a recent Krups coffee maker too.

So…haven’t had too long, but like it so far. I give it 4 stars because of the hassle of removing the chemical smell.

Very Disappointed~Had high hopes for excellent coffee.
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
After reading all the reviews I chose to side with the excellent reviews and reckon positive. Incorrect choice.

First the water spits out the side as it drips. The lid falls off when you pour even with your thumb on top. If you cover it any more you would be burned. And as another reviewer said the band is so lose it feels like the handle is going to fall off.

If you are willing to deal with that you won’t be when you taste the coffee. I tried 5 times opening new bags of coffee too. Dreadful tasting. Like chemicals.

So it is going back so glad Amazon has the 30 day return policy. Too much to pay for something that doesn’t work.

The Zojirushi is the BEST coffeemaker I’ve owned. Though it is simple and doesn’t have things like auto programming and other bells and whistles: it makes a darn excellent cup of coffee! I’ve been waiting for a excellent cup for quite a long time.

    Beware of Flawed Design
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this coffeemaker based upon others’ comments. This coffeemaker is very simple to use, simply designed, and simple to clean. If you like drip coffee, it makes a very decent tasting cup. The reasons I gave it 4 stars is beacuse I reckon that the price is too high. Also, pouring the hot coffee can be tough. If you remove the filter basket, the coffee spills on the counter when it is poured. This happens even with the lid still on the pot. If you leave the filter basket in the pot, you must remember to hold the lid while you are pouring because the manufacturer says that injury could occur. Why charge someone so much money for a flawed lid/basket design that could cause injury?

  30. Glenn E. Klima Says:

    Brilliant design, uniquely simple…..
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received my “new” coffeepot yesterday. and am enjoying my 3rd brew as I type this. As a retired engineer, I was surprised at it’s simple, nearly idiot-proof design. It takes up about 1/3 of the space as my previous 12 cup coffeemaker.

This coffeemaker does exactly what it was designed to do, make an brilliant cup of coffee (5cups/2mugs) and nothing else, no bells, whistles, or timers and alarms…..one simply labeled and illuminated switch, on/off.

The filter holder is unique in it’s design, it sits within the pot’s lid. It is designed in a very simple, but interlocking manner. nearly impossible to assemble wrongly. Also it’s ergonomically designed lid/handle tends to lead your thumb to cover the tab that holds the lid while pouring.

If you are a single person or a couple, and don’t require more than 5 cups at a time, and don’t need a clock/timer to reset after power failures, then this is the pot for you!

Forgot to mention…the spout does not drip either!!
