Mine is working just fine
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I received this machine as a gift for Christmas just a couple weeks ago, and then I got worried when I read the reviews online. The first time I used it I was worried it wouldn’t work correctly and I would have to lie to the person who gave it to me and say that it was fantastic. So I was VERY careful to follow all of the instructions, hoping that I would somehow prove the negative reviews incorrect…
Either there is a WIDE variance in the quality of individual machines, or those who are leaving the negative reviews aren’t using the machine properly. I even waited a few weeks to leave a review, in case the machine blew up on me after a few uses. But now that I’ve made a dozen brilliant cappuccinos, I feel safe leaving a positive review. My guess is that many of the people who have the machine blow up on them are not properly releasing the excess steam. This takes a small while, standing holding a pitcher of cold water underneath the steam nozzle, and it’s kind of annoying to wait there for a few minutes, but it releases all of the steam safely. The instruction manual says to froth the milk first, so I’ve been doing that, and then when I switch the knob to the coffee setting, the espresso comes right out.
I really have no complaints with my cappuccino maker. It would be nice if I didn’t have to hold the frothing pitcher while the machine “de-steams,” but that’s been my only complaint. My cappuccinos have been fantastic, and I’m getting better at frothing the milk and gauging how much water to place in the tank so that I only have to de-steam for 2 minutes, instead of 5. I’d give it 4 1/2 stars, but that wasn’t an option. So I rounded down so it wouldn’t seem like I was inflating my rating to counteract the low scores.

Cheap simple to use espresso machine
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I recently got this espresso machine as a present. Before using it I read all the negative reviews and was nearly ready to have it exchanged, but I gave it a shot. First of all, I used whole bean coffee which I ground myself, and on the first go the machine did not spit any coffee around as other people experienced. The coffee came out after 3 minutes and the whole process took no more than 5 minutes total, unlike other people mentioned. Espresso was decent quality (the quality of the coffee depends mostly on the beans than on the machine). The steamer is a small weird, but if you just want something for small money that makes coffee/espresso and occasional cappuccinos, this machine works.

Please be Careful

We bought this product from a local shop, relying on the venerable Krups name and the brilliant price to steer our choice. This was a horrible mistake. The inner workings of the machine contain a plastic called butyl – it is food grade of course [i.e., non-toxic], but it is a particularly odious product. Opening the reservoir causes the acrid smell to assault your nose, and really using the machine will guarantee that this terrible emanation fills the entire kitchen. We’ve tried every conceivable method of mitigating this dreadful scent, which also flavors the espresso produced with a unique, disturbing, artificial taste, and nothing is effective. In small this constitutes a profound design flaw, and I would strenuously recommend that anyone considering this product stay away. In fact, if zero stars were an option I would have rated it as such. You might have a better experience, but with so many other excellent products out there, it hardly seems worth the fifty dollar gamble.

Excellent starter espresso maker
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a fantastic espresso machine if you are on a budget or just starting to make your own espresso drinks. But you get what you pay for, within a month (maybe two months) of use, the handle broke off on the filter, but it still works, so my husband and I have managed to work around it.
We are huge iced mocha drinkers, so we haven’t really used the steamer yet.
I agree with some of the other reviewers, that it does take awhile for it to start brewing the espresso.
But we’ve use it pretty much everyday for the last 5 months and it is been a excellent buy.
