I bought this for my sister for Christmas, and she is very satisfied with it. It is exactly what she wanted, she especially likes the thermal carafe as she likes to drink coffee all day long.

    Brilliant coffee, some minor caveats
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just made the jump from a 10-year-ancient, under-$20 machine to the Cuisinart Grind-and-Brew. This machine is a fantastic fit for me, but it won’t be for everyone.

First off, and most vital, this machine makes a fantastic cup of coffee. The grinder gets a much more uniform grind than my hand-held. The water gets appropriately hot, without burning the beans. And no hot plate means the last cup tastes as excellent as the first.

A few negatives, minor for me, but possibly a larger deal for some:

    * It’s a small complicated. Between the addition of the grinder, the intricately-fitting components, and the six buttons, it’s substantially less intuitive than a basic machine. Not rocket science, but if you’re the type of person who despises reading the manual, this machine may frustrate you.

    * Lots of electronic beeps. Five beeps to let you know the cycle is done, and an incessant double beep if the pieces aren’t place together properly.

    * If you’re plotting to program the machine to brew before you wake up, know that the grinder is loud and sudden, as are most grinders. I’m a light sleeper, and my bedroom is close enough to the kitchen that this would startle the hell out of me (I don’t really care about the programmer, so it’s moot to me). You can disable the grinder and use pre-ground, but then you might as well get a less expensive model without a built-in grinder.

I received this coffee maker for Christmas and was able to open it a few days earlier since we were going out of town for Christmas. At first I did not reckon I would use the coffee grinder as I already have a stand alone grinder, but, the grinder is so simple to use along with the coffee maker.

Clean up of the maker is very simple, it takes less than three minutes and that includes wiping the coffee maker down inside and out. It is very gorgeous on the counter, and fits in well with the appliances that I have. The program feature is also very simple to use. I like that this model have the window on the outside of the maker so I can see how much water I’m putting in the maker. The last Cuisinart I owned did not have this feature.

It appears that Cuisinart read the reviews and improved this latest model coffee maker. I would recommend this model to anyone, as I simply could not be more pleased with it.

Excellent Product – Brilliant Improvement Over Earlier Versions
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
For those who want grind and brew features this is the best product for the money. There are the higher priced models but some of us have to stay on a budget. Compared to the earlier version, I’ve had 3 of the earlier ones; they do tend to break down after 2 years. This model has significant improvements. The best is that it is so much simpler to clean the grinding area. The earlier model was next to impossible, this more open design makes it possible to really get those beans that get into the grinding area out.

In reading the other reviews I did have a few concerns.

    1. The sediment from the filter: Well that’s the reality of permanent filters. So it’s convenience of not having to get those paper things out and over to the trash. If that detail is annoying use paper. Even the high priced machines have that issue and Cuisnart clearly informs you of this issue with a notice before unpacking the product.

    2. Noise: The review that goes on about how noisy this machine is. Gad face reality, these are coffee beans getting ground up in somewhat large area in an enclosed area without a lot of sound insulation. It is going to get loud. No louder than a regular coffee grinder and a lot quieter than a garbage disposal. To avoid having the noise in the morning I do the unthinkable, grind the beans the evening before. OK, I’m not a purist.

    3. Coffee not the right temp: Face reality, the carafe is going to be the same temp as the room it’s sitting in. So it like most people who turn down there temp in their house at night to let’s say even 68 degrees at night or even 70, the the physics say the carafe temp is going to be 70. Now, brew coffee and when it gets into the insulated carafe the temp is going to average out. Since the insulated model doesn’t have a warming plate, you’re may want to take into consideration that you’re brewing into a room temp carafe and the coffee temp is going to cool down. Cuisinart clearly informs you that simply warming up the carafe with hot water before brewing takes care of this issue. I easily deal with this when the machine starts brewing you have a excellent 30-45 seconds before the first drop comes out and the machine does have a function to keep coffee from coming out unless the carafe is properly placed. That gives plenty of time to run some hot water into it, get the inside temp up and the result is coffee at the perfect temp. Now I do have to say that it is very simple for me because I have one of those instant hot water faucets at the sink so I don’t have to wait for the hot water to start flowing.

There have been some very excellent user oriented changes to this model. It’s not perfect, but for the money it’s the best you’re going to find on the market. Take the critics in these reviews with a grain of salt.

Of course one of the reasons I am really, really pleased with this machine is that I ran into it when Amazon had it on sale for $110 with a $30 rebate from Cuisinart. My final cost was $85!! I called customer service to see how the rebate would work. They told me a mail-in coupon would come with the product. When the product arrived ( 3 days later, and I used the free standard shipping during the holiday period) there was no rebate coupon. I called customer service and their response was “we’ll just add a $30 credit” to your account. I was expecting getting a run around anticipating that they would place the problem off on Cuisinart. But no, Amazon steps up to plate, resolves the problem in less than 1 minute and the credit appeared on my credit card the next day. Now that is customer service!!

My hats off to Amazon to putting the customer first. Beyond the coffee maker at $85 final cost with free shipping, I have to say that Amazon has matured into a very customer focused retailer. They have went beyond excellent prices and the convenience of shopping at home; they are real competition to the brick & moter stores. Amazon’s focus on the customer really gives the retail experience a lot of us remember in the “ancient department store” days.

I have never taken the time to write a product review, but I do delight in having them available to get unbiased reviews and input. This time I felt it was only honest to take the time to place a realistic perspective to some of the negative reviews while at the same time expressing my positive experience with Amazon. For me Amazon has primarily been a convenience factor, now I shop with them because of their dependability and customer service focus. Price is not the driver for me anymore. I’ve just learned that if I really want customer service, the most reliable and predictable place to shop is Amazon!!

Took some time to get used to but excellent
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I will add some things not previously mentioned.

I use a bit more coffee then I did with my ancient machine simply because making up to 4 cups in this machine requires more beans to be a stronger cup of coffee. If you make a full pot, or more than 4 cups, it doesn’t seem to require more beans. This is the case even though I use the 1-4 cup setting.

I like my coffee strong and hot. Maybe in the summer it won’t be such an issue but since it is winter, I feel like my pot HAS to be allowed to sit in really hot water while I clean out the machine from the day before and set up the mornings coffee to brew. So the first thing I do is dump out the remaining ancient coffee, fill the pot up with steaming hot water, and then go to town on setting up the days coffee to brew. Right before hitting the on button I dump out the hot water and place the carafe in for brewing. While the coffee is brewing I do the same to my cup, making it hot. Again, I like my coffee HOT AND STRONG, so this is what I do.

Having said all that, I gave the machine 4 stars because the effort is worth it. I get a REALLY SMOOTH cup of coffee from this machine. It took me awhile to get used to the taste of smooth and fresh brewed coffee. I’m used to coffee that sits on the burner and tastes strong from heat. This is strong, smooth and hot but I do have to work a tad bit harder for it. For me, it’s worth it.

Cleaning the machine – getting used to it – know where the extra effort needs to be applied and pretty much have it down to a science now. Also worth it. I like not having to use paper filters any more. :)

Saw the same machine for [...] at a local store. Bought in on Amazon and got the rebate. FANTASTIC deal.

Since Perfection left 2000 years ago I no longer expect it. I do but try to buy things that are close and this coffeemaker is certainly close. Yeah you have to CLEAN it after each use… but hey I usually brush my teeth after I use them too (could’ve went the other direction). Other than that expected job, I will say this machine does an brilliant job. To those that complain about it being loud… buy pre-ground coffee…jeezzz. It isn’t a cottonball grinder for cryin’ out loud.

Do you ever read reviews and come to the conclusion that some people just can’t be pleased? Grinder’s too loud, Coffee’s too hot/cold, Ya have to clean it, It’s too heavy, to plasticy (is that a word) it’s tooooooooo

    Grinding is too much work
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I thought this would be a fantastic machine. But, the grinder needed to be cleaned after/before every use. Too much time and energy. It was simpler to use a separate grinder. Also this model had the stainless steel thermos carafe with no warming tray. The coffee was cold in less than an hour. Returned it and got Cusinart’s grinder that holds 1/2 lb. of beans and the grind can be adusted.

  8. Tomas Griffin Says:

An exercise in frustration and time-wasting
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
If spending 10-15 minutes fiddling around with pieces of plastic trying to assemble them into the right combination is your thought of fun every morning, then I heartily recommend what Cuisinart has given us here. For the rest of us mere mortals, who arise in a slightly grumpy state and need that first coffee hit in order to get our day started, stay away from this. I have seldom encountered such a poorly designed product.

The fiancee picked this one up and it has become an unmentionable topic between us, guaranteed to spark flare-ups and snappiness in the kitchen. So this secret review will have to suffice instead.

    Pros:

    - looks nice

    Cons:

    - what feels like 47 separate small pieces of plastic that all need to washed/assembled/disassembled every time you use this monstrosity. These are: (1) the black plastic basket thing which clips on in a weird way (2) the hanging thingybob that you have to turn around and screw in there (3) the grinder which only seems to disperse about 80% of the ground coffee down into the filter paper and basket waiting below (meaning that every time you have to remove the grinder and bonk it against the side in order to knock the rest in) (4) the clear plastic top of the coffee grinding part so you can look in and reckon “That’s never going to be enough ground coffee, is it?!?”

    And you are always right.

    It never is.

OK it was only 4 pieces, but their ultimate fiddliness makes it feel like 47.

    - Next disadvantage: confusing digital lights and buttons at the front of the machine. When you finally have poured in the water, ground your beans and switched the “on” button, a soothing green digital light appears. You walk away to the bathroom, confident that you will be welcomed on your return by a full pot of steaming coffee. Instead you return from the shower, towelling your still-wet hair to find an empty pot and this constipated machine refusing to release any liquids. (“But it’s simple,” the fiancee clarifies. “First you have to switch it off. Then you need the orange light that says ‘grinder off’ to be on. Then you press the ‘on-off’ switch again.” (and then turn around three times, click your heels together and do a shimmy)) My method has become: press a few buttons, hope for the best and place your head against the machine listening for gurgles inside. (I look like an expectant father these days…albeit a very irritated looking one)

Yes, I am sure that given enough training and instruction, I would be able to assemble these parts like a rifle expert. And decipher the cryptic codes of the digital lights like a morse code radio operator.

But you should not need an advanced degree in mechanics to make a cup of coffee.

I would not consider myself a non-technical person. (I can repair bicycles, fix the miniature screws that fall out of my glasses every 6 months and I can program a small HTML to do web design. I have a degree in business. I solve Su Doku puzzles. I taught myself to play the fiddle. I am kind to children)

But life is just too small and precious to waste messing on this. Do yourself a favour when you choose your coffee machine, keep it simple. Avoid this train wreck from Cuisinart!

    Poor Design – Messy Cleanup
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Because we are all different with different expectations, I’d like to describe myself as a person who likes a excellent cup of coffee, but I am not a coffee snob, or someone who thumbs their nose at quick food or donut shop coffees. I appreciate a excellent design just as much as I will denounce a poor design or an item.

I’m a huge proponent of “you get what you pay for”. I bought my grind and brew at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% coupon. The maker also had a $30 rebate, so I thought it was a excellent enough deal to spend the $130 or so and get a grinder/maker combo. I want to say final cost was around $85 or so.

For this review, I will not talk about taste, because we all use different beans and like different strengths/flavors.

The Excellent: The maker looks excellent and has nice stainless/plastic finishes. It is simple to use (note I did not say simple to clean), controls are simple. The thermal carafe is awesome, coffee stays hot and drinkable for several hours. Pouring water into the tank is simple, no spills/splashing/small holes to pour in to. All parts are simple to remove for washing. You dont have to use the grinder; you can skip the step and just place preground coffee in the filter.

    The Terrible: Messy.

The 1st issue is that the chute, which carries the ground coffee from the grinder to the filter is not properly sealed or mated to the cover over the filter. The result is some grinds/residue end up on top of the filter cover, which you end up needing to clean after each use.

The 2nd issue is that the poor design of this maker allows steam condensation to enter the grinding chamber causing all the fine grinds in the chamber (which didn’t make their way down the chute) to coagulate leaving “gunk” inside the chamber cylinder. The result is that you have to remove, wash and THOROUGHLY DRY the 2-piece chamber and chute before grinding again. If not completely dry, new grinds will stick to the insides.

The 3rd issue is that you end up with “gunk” residue under the chamber in the housing where the grinding mechanism is. The only explanation I have for that is that the really fine grinds must get airborne and get carried by the steam into the housing itself. This is also attributed to the fact that the chute is not sealed to the filter cover. You don’t have to clean this every time, but after a while, the ‘gunk’ gets caked on and you have to get in the housing with your finger and a wet paper towel to scrub out the tight corners/spaces.

The problem overall is that this maker fails to separate the grinding from the brewing, resulting in an overly messy clean up. With all the steam and condensation, it is just annoying that you have to clean out the grinder/chute every single time. And since this is only a 10 cup maker, if you are making multiple pots (say if you have company), you are doing this multiple times

After realizing this issue, I looked on Amazon to see if there was a grinder that did separate the grinding from the brewing. There is a grinder/brewer made by Capresso that seems to accomplish this with a grinder that is offset and not directly over the pot/steam. It’s more expensive, but with that, I may “get what I pay for”.

    Fantastic Christmas Gift
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This came as an early Christmas gift a few days ago (yes, I reckon it was bought through Amazon). I am quite impressed with the fantastic tasting freshly ground coffee from this machine. I have thoroughly cleaned it (including the grinder) after each use, and found the total cleaning time to take about 2-3 minutes on each occasion. I reckon it is a rather sad commentary on our society when folks (including a number of Amazon reviewers) seem to take offense with having to perform such rudimentary maintenance. If you want zero personal effort, go to Starbucks and swallow the premium. Otherwise, delight in this investment in one of life’s pleasures….waking up to a truly fantastic cup of coffee in your own home.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Everything about this machine is incredible. It made my favorite coffee taste better, which I did not reckon was possible! I like waking up to a fresh brewed pot of coffee and knowing I don’t have to get to it straight away because the carafe is metal and will keep it warm for a long time. Just make sure you rinse out the grinder every few brews to allow it to run smoothly and you are in excellent shape. If there was a housefire, I might grab this thing first before running out the door.

  12. Benjamin J. Frank Says:

    A Daily Hassle
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The way this works is a bit of a hassle and not smooth–you must measure & place the beans you want for each pot you’re making, putting them into the partially disassembled top grinder unit – then assemble, add water, and close the top lid. Once done brewing, that 2 piece grinder assembly will be all fogged and moist so you have to take it apart, rinse and let dry before you use it again.

I expected it to work like my previous Capresso unit (6 years ancient, beginning to leak somewhere) – just add several days of beans to a reservoir and then forget the whole bean part of the coffee equation until refilling–just add water and keep the carafe clean with very occasional grinder cleaning (I cleaned my grinder less than 2x per year – yes, I’m a pig – but with the relative genius design of the Capresso, no moisture ever got to where the beans were kept/ground so the worst case was that some grindings would sit for a day before being pushed into the pot the next day).

I never imagined or read about how much more complicated and involved making coffee would be with this machine than what I’d gotten used to. Not that it’s hard in a technical sense but it’s 2 extra non-trivial steps every day–measure the beans and disassemble/clean the grinder unit–these were steps I am not accustomed to and I reckon it’s just poor design for what is otherwise a fantastic $100 coffeemaker.

If i had it to do over, I’d have just bought a plain non-grinding maker ($50?) and a burr grinder ($25?) and you get the same thing with much less hassle (no need to disassemble and clean the grinder after it gets wet every day).

Once I get past my dismay of the hassle factor, I find that:

    the machine looks nice

the thermal carafe is brilliant (keeps coffee warm and I assume uses far less energy over the course of the day).

the coffee tastes very excellent (maybe not quite as excellent as the previous machine which I assume is due to the grinder not being a burr grinder).

If you’re someone who puts a high value on low hassle, I recommend you find a unit that provides a “bean reservoir” for several days worth of beans (and double check the operation to see that you don’t have to take the grinder apart to clean after every usage). If you don’t need a thermal carafe, there are several choices. If you want the thermal carafe, there are only perhaps 2-3 choices – including I reckon the more pricey 12 cup Cuisinart.

I despised it from the beginning. Water got into the bean compartment and so of course into the ground coffee and the chute down to the filter and basket. It was a mess to clean each time. The coffee was excellent, but I couldn’t stand the mess every morning. I was so appreciative of Amazon’s policy and procedure which made it simple to return the item. Amazone was aalso extremely prompt in giveing me a refund of the buy price as well as the shipping. I’ll continue to buy from Amazone from time to time as in the past.

Tried again, worked fine. Every week thereafter, at least once a week I had the same problem. Making coffee should not be “rocket science”. Many improvements over the DGB-600BC
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We had a DGB-600BC and used it daily for about 4 years. The grinder assembly finally seized and we could no longer remove it. We had been looking around for a new coffee maker, anyway, so we went ahead and bought this one (DGB-650BC) at a local store.

We’ve been using it for a couple weeks now and it makes a fine cup of coffee, just like the last one did. I noticed straight away, that a few things that turned out to be issues with the last model had been fixed or improved upon with this one.

    1) The grinder compartment is much better separated from the water reservoir and also designed better for all the grounds to go into the filter basket. The older model always left a bit of a mess, both in the grinder compartment and on the small shelf that separated the filter basket from the coffee pot, and around the burner plate. I haven’t seen any of that mess with this model. I can’t tell you how pleased that makes me.

    2) The small shelf I spoke about in #1 is now gone. That’s a plus. Since this maker is designed better, it isn’t needed anyway. Also, this shelf caused build up around the door latch making it hard to shut after a very small time. I’m glad it’s gone.

    3) The filter basket door mechanism is far better designed. The ancient model I had to slam shut, sometimes repeatedly, before it would stay shut. This one has a much better and more sturdy hinge mechanism and latch.

    4) New to this model (the ancient one didn’t have this) is a window on the side so you can see how much water you’re pouring in. It’s clearly marked and has a red floating ball to make it simple to see. I really like this feature.

The grinder seem a small louder than the ancient one, but I’ve never met a coffee grinder that wasn’t loud and it’s only for a very small time. I like having freshly ground coffee first thing in the morning.

As far as cleanup goes for the grinding assembly and filter basket, it only takes a minute or two. Aside from the coffee pot itself, there are 5 pieces to clean and it really is quick and simple to empty the filter basket and rinse the pieces.

In small, this is fine coffee maker, much improved from the DGB-600BC, and I am pleased we upgraded to it.

I bought this as a replacement for an older model Cuisinart. The new model is works exactly like the ancient one. Same features as the ancient one, brews a pot of coffee in about 10 minutes. Just place in your favorite coffee bean and you’ll get the perfect pot of coffee. Other Reviews have complained about cleaning the coffemaker, it takes about 30 seconds to clean out the grinder and coffee basket and get ready to brew a new pot. Yes, the carafe keeps the coffee hot for about 3 hours (luke warm by then) and fresh out of the pot it is hot enough to make the outside of your cup hot. The coffee itself is DREADFUL!!! Tastes weak and has no aroma at all and the grinder has one setting which I reckon OVER GRINDS the beans. Also, the gold filter leaves mud like resadue in the bottom your cup (didn’t have this issue when I tried the paper filters) if you like hot brown water with barely any flavor you’ll be pleased. Me, i’m going back to my $20. Mr. Coffee and grinding my beans or doing it at the store.

    Frustrating design flaw
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
The thermal coffee pot is designed in such a way that you have to turn the thing nearly upside down to get the last cup and a half out and half the time it spills becuase you’ve got it turned upside down! Very frustrating! It is also next to impossible to get the last half cup out, so in my frugal mind, I’m losing a half cup of coffee with every pot. I know, its probably less than a pennies worth of coffee, but its the principal of it.

Not sure why others are having problems getting the grinder out, it comes out very easily on mine, but it does get a lot of moisture in it post-brew, making a bunch of sludge that doesn’t just rinse away. There are too many parts to clean, which I knew going in, but I liked the whole thought of progamming, grinding, etc., so I thought I’d just deal with it.

I like it ok, will hang on to it, but won’t buy another one.

If you want a coffeemaker that has the capability to grind, this may be for you. Before you go ahead and buy one though, you should first question yourself an honest question. “Will I really use the grinding capabilities every day?”

    YOU WILL LIKE THIS IF:

    1. You want to grind everyday and have the time to clean AND DRY all the parts after every use.

    2. You only plot on using the grinder function occasionally.

    YOU WILL BE DISSAPPOINTED IF:

    1. You want to use the grinder everyday but don’t have the time or patience to clean AND DRY the parts after every use.

I really didn’t know what to expect as far as the grinder goes. Because of my morning schedule and the maintenance required, I only use the grinder function on the occasional weekend. The coffee is noticeably better when I use the grinder and the carafe does keep the coffee nice and hot. But like any coffee that sits, it will start to taste burnt. I would have given it 5 stars based on function and build quality but there are two issues that drop it down to 4 stars. Issue 1 is that the grinder sounds like a jet engine and it continues well after all the beans are ground. Would it have been possible to reduce the decibels a small? Issue 2 is that even if you don’t grind, condensation builds up in the inside of the grinder and stays there. So when you want to grind, you will still have to dry the parts first even if you haven’t used the grinder in days.

This is my second Cuisinart Grind-and-Brew Thermal 10-cup automatic coffeemaker. I was so spoiled by the first one, which had daily use for six years, that nothing else would do. Nothing like having fresh-ground coffee ready for you when you wake up and coffee that stays hot in the pot for hours. I like it!

    A fantastic coffeemaker!

I bought this new Cuisinart thermal grind and brew this month. I reckon the overall design is much improved over the our older version. It looks sleeker and simpler to clean. I know there are some complaints about too many parts to wash/rinse but I reckon its something we got used to having had a grind and brew coffeemaker for the 8 years. I like the water gage on the outside too! I just place the sprayer nozzle in and fill. No more tiptoes to see the level from the top! I’m looking forward to another long relationship with this new coffeemaker.

PS. The downside: coffee anywhere else tastes dreadful! :o )

    Fantastic Coffee

This was a replacement for another Cuisinart Grind and brew coffee maker we had for many years. We buy whole 8 o’clock French Roast coffee beans and wake up each morning with really fresh coffee. It’s designed to clean up easily and it’s vital you do so after each pot. The thermal coffee pot keeps the coffee hot for several hours. I will never buy any other coffee maker.

    Excellent machine, work to clean

I replaced a many year ancient bruan machine. The flavors from this machine are wonderful. Coffee is made hot, stays hot and tastes fantastic.

My only complaints are three fold:

    1. It leaked on the first one, so I exchanged it

    2. The clean up process is lengthy and messy compared to pulling a filter out of a basket

    3. The grinder has to be cleaned after every use

I make 3-4 pots of coffee a day, so I likely won’t be cleaning it every pot. But if you were it’s more work than it’s worth.

Finally, I went to buy it on Amazon but Bed Bath & Beyond will email you a 20% off coupon if you sign up to the mailer list. Place it at $110 locally (2 miles away) so I couldn’t justify supporting Amazon.

Anyone else wonder why everyone in the country does it for the same price? Lovely free market we have.

    Terrible design for bean grinder.

This product was a terrible disappointment. Every time you grind beans for a pot of coffee moisture goes back up into the grinder. You have to clean the sludge out of grinder every time. This is a flawed design and Cuisinart Customer Service could care less. There are many other brands on the market without this problem. I would not buy this product again.

This is the third unit I have bought, does not work more than a couple of years at the most, but there is really nothing else out there that is better, the unit is fantastic when it works, although hard to keep clean.

    Like my new coffee maker!

I have been reviewing grind and brew coffee makers for a couple years now. Kept reading the negative items about the previous Cuisinart machines and chose to hold off. The Capresso’s machines, were just too much money for my budget. This new model does everything and more than I need and it looks sharp too! It doesn’t make a mess on your counter top, the carafe doesn’t leak, the grinder doesn’t clog up and the carafe keep the coffee hot for hours and my high school aged kids usually end off the last of it after school making iced coffee’s. I even used a 20% off coupon from Bed Bath and Beyond and got the best deal I could get! If you have been waiting and watching like me, no need to wait any longer. This coffee maker will be sitting on my countertop for years!
